Marco Island Florida Schools

Kindergarten-bound youngsters are eligible to enter a school if they reach the age of five on or before September 1 of the current school year. Children aged six by September 1 may attend first grade, but graduation from kindergarten is required for admission into first grade.

Florida law requires all students entering school to be immunized for diphtheria, pertussis, tetnus, polomyelitis, rubella, rubeola and mumps. A certificate of immunization is required from either a doctor's office or the county health department and forms may be obtained from the school board office or the health department of the school.

Your child also needs a school entry examination performed by a doctor no more than 12 months prior to enrollment. You will also need to become a resident of Florida or pay a $50. student fee prior to enrollment. Exceptions are migratory agriculture laborers, military, and some branches of the federal government.

The Collier County public school system was the first in Florida to be fully accredited by an independent accrediting agency. Vocational education is provided by the James Lorenzo Walker Vocational-Technical Center located on Estey Avenue in Naples. Adult education classes are also available throughout Collier County at the various high schools.

Educational opportunities are not limited to those offered only through the public school system. Many private schools exist to augment the public system, offering pre-school through high school education. The Collier County Campus of Edison Community College located on Lely Cultural Parkway in Naples provides a two-year Associates degree program. Both undergraduate and advanced degrees can be earned at International College and Walden University in Naples. Barry University, in Fort Myers, schedules evening and weekend classes to accommodate working students. Florida's 10th state university -- Florida Gulf Coast University -- is north of Naples with easy access via I-75.
